The Institute for Journalism and Society (IJS) of the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held the symposium "When Journalism Meets AI" on 30 Oct 2024. The event was well-attended and had the honour of hosting convener Professor Raymond R. Wong, Adjunct Professor of the School of Communication who emphasised that journalists remain the core of quality journalism, stating "trust yourself, your own intelligence."
Distinguished speakers provided insightful discussions. Ms Wang Yi of Xinhua News Agency showcased their innovative MediaGPT model for automated content generation. Mr Haris Amiri of Ground News discussed leveraging AI to uncover media bias and filter bubbles, particularly regarding the forthcoming 2024 U.S. Election. Ms Wai Pui Man introduced RTHK's new AI Lab and the potential applications of AI technology in programme production.
The symposium provided a platform to debate AI's growing role in the field. While automation may accelerate media production processes, as Eric Wishart of AFP stated, human oversight is essential to maintain the integrity and accuracy of published content. The symposium also highlighted advances in the field as well as precautions for responsibly incorporating emerging technologies.
